Mario Kart DS is yet another game in the successful line of Mario related games but is definitely not any less fun. With all new circuits exclusive to the DS console and all your favourites from Nintendo 64, Gamecube, SNES and Gameboy Advance anyone who has played Mario Kart before or not will love it.
Mario Kart on the DS is not all about the racing circuits though there are seven levels, each with nine missions that you have to complete of which all are fun. There is the versus mode in which you can face off in teams or individually against the other CPU controlled characters on the courses of your choice in the order of your choice. In Grand Prix there is, as always the 50cc, 100cc and 150cc classes to race in as well as the 150cc mirror class. Time Trial mode pits you and your character of choice against the clock on any of the available courses. Battle mode again sees you facing off against the other characters in a team or individually to burst their balloons or to collect more shines than they do.
Types of missions you complete to unlock more include tasks such as driving through numbered gates in order, collecting the specified amount of coins, destroying the correct number of item boxes, hitting Cheep Cheeps, performing a set amount of power-slides in one lap, the INCREDIBLY fun boss challenges and, my favourite, driving out of Luigis mansion… BACKWARDS.
All your favourite (and not so favourite) characters are back:
- Mario
- Luigi
- Peach
- Yoshi
- Toad
- Donkey Kong
- Wario
- Bowser
- Daisy
- Dry Bones
- Waluigi
The Grand Prix has two choices now Retro Grand Prix and Nitro Grand Prix the Cups and Courses of these are listed below:
NITRO GRAND PRIX:
Mushroom Cup - Figure 8 Circuit, Yoshi Falls, Cheep Cheep Beach, Luigis Mansion
Flower Cup – Desert Hills, Delfino Square, Waluigi Pinball, Shroom Ridge
Star Cup – DK Pass, Tick-Tock Clock, Mario Circuit, Airship Fortress
Special Cup – Wario Stadium, Peach Gardens, Bowser Castle, Rainbow Road
RETRO GRAND PRIX:
Shell Cup – Mario Circuit 1, Moo Moo Farm, Peach Circuit, Luigi Circuit (GCN)
Banana Cup – Donut Plains 1, Frappe Snowland, Bowser Castle 2, Baby Park
Leaf Cup – Koopa Beach 2, Choco Mountain, Luigi Circuit (GBA), Mushroom Bridge
Lightning Cup – Choco Island 2, Banshee Boardwalk, Sky Garden, Yoshi Circuit.
I think that the biggest disappointment is the fact that the only DS feature used during game play is the Microphone in the Balloon Battle to inflate more balloons. Wi Fi use is also very minimal. This said Mario Kart is liked by nearly every ones favourite and one of the DS’s best selling games (10.45 million worldwide).
So drag those Go-Karts out of the garage and race your friends down to the nearest stockist to get your hands on this awesome game and be careful of misplaced banana skins…

Time to dust off the Fedoras and get those whips cracking because Indy's back and just as (if not more) popular than last time. Oh, and did I mention that he's now on DS and in LEGO.
