‘The wand chooses the wizard…’ but in this adventure the wizard (or muggle) chooses the wand. Now I am a fan of the Harry Potter books and Movies but this is the first Harry Potter game I have played and to start with I thought it was going to be worse than having the Cruciatus curse used on me. The start is just a few boring cut scenes followed by a quick (5 seconds or less) walk to a tunnel and then another cut scene. Yep you don’t even get to fight the Dementors. Next is more cut scenes of Harry getting taken to Grimmauld Place and you don’t start the game really till you arrive there.

I am going to complain about the bad features of the game first. The movement is really bad. You follow around a hand that seems to have some issues giving directions often spinning in full circles and confusing you. This is the most frustrating part of this game. Secondly I have to complain about the fact that the DS touch screen and features are NOT utilised in duelling. You play a bad game of connect the dots and then that’s it to cast a spell when in a duel. You can’t deflect enemy spells, which you should be able to.
Probably my last complaint is the often fractured and, to me, confusing storyline. Why couldn’t they have used the basic storyline of the book?

Now that I have complained about I suppose I should go on about the good features. Potions is, in my opinion, the lesson that uses the features of the DS the best. Using the stylus you drag the correct amount of the ingredient (shown on the top screen) into the cauldron. You also stir the potion in the cauldron with the stylus in the direction also shown on the top screen. Now my favourite part of potion making is the fact that to heat the potion and the flames it’s simmering over hotter you blow into the microphone.

You can attend Harry’s key lessons such as Potions, Astronomy, Divination, Charms, Transfiguration, History of Magic, and Herbology. None of these except Potions are really awesome but they’re all fun in their own way. You can attend the O.W.Ls for all of these and you can get all the different grades; O for Outstanding, E for Exceeds Expectations, A for Acceptable, P for Poor, D for Dreadful, and T for Troll. I am a little disappointed that you can’t do Care of Magical Creatures but there is a Mini-Game that involves feeding Buckbeak the hippogriff and one where you the Thestrals as well.

There are quite a few fun Mini-Games like Gobstones (magical marbles), Exploding snap, Quidditch, and Occlumency. Also there is a game called Chocolate Frogs. The aim of which is to catch as many chocolate frogs as you can.

All in all this game had so much potential but I think only a third of this was fulfilled I still like it though. It was quite repetitive in parts but I had fun playing it. So go ahead grab your wand and Summon up a copy while I quickly Dissaparate *CRACK*.
